Spring 2008 Economic Development Class Blog

Welcome Hunter College Economics 330 and Economics 730 students. You've found your way to this class blog. I'll have much more to say about this place in class, but here are the main points:

This is basically a place where I will be posting short entries and links to economic development items of interest. Typically I will post about topics that are in the news that relate to materials covered or to be covered in class, or that I think might be of general interest to students.

I invite you to post your own comments and discuss any entry, or email me with suggested topics you may have seen discussed elsewhere. You'll always be able to find a link to this blog from the Blackboard course navigation menu (and you can subscribe to this 'blog feed' just as you would to any other).

Although you are under no obligation to read blog entries for class, I think you will likely find the course more interesting and enjoyable if you do, and you will also likely find the material useful when it comes moment to write up good exam or problem set answers.

I am re-using the same blog address I used in the past: all entries from 2006 and before are from an earlier trade class.

Krugman, In Praise of Cheap Labor

I know this may be hard for some of you to believe but before Paul Krugman was writing for the New York Times and outraging Bush administration supporters, he was writing for Slate and other publications and ridiculing Clinton administration officials for their 'dangerous obsession' with 'competitiveness' and their 'strangely careless arithmetic.' He was also known for challenging anti-globalization protesters for 'not thinking their position through.' His piece " In Praise of Cheap Labor Bad jobs at bad wages are better than no jobs at all " which appeared in Slate - Dismal Scientist - March 20, 1997 compactly sums up his position on this last point. eco740: PS1 and fixed link

I've posted problem set 1 (due Oct 10th) to Blackboard course documents section. Fixed link: A web link to one of tonight's external readings, Jeffrey Williamson's Globalization, Labor Markets and Policy Backlash from the Past , had not been working, but now it is. See if you can interpret his empirical findings on convergence and changes in income distribution using the Specific Factors Model we were working with last class (but applied to international rather than intra-national labor mobility).
